Assessing Flow Rate of Water Sources

Assessing Flow Rate of Water Sources

Hand Pump

  1. Make sure water flow in the hand pump is constant (pump the water out for approximately a minute)
  2. Fill a known volume (kodam – 15 litres) of vessel by pumping the water from the hand pump.
  3. Note Initial time (at start of pumping)
  4. Note Final time (when the vessel is filled)

Borewell

1.      Note the Power of the Pump (HP)
2.      Pump the water from the borewell into a known volume of Storage Tank.  Make sure the Storage tank (sintex or concrete) is empty
3.      Note Initial time (at start of pumping)
4.      Note Final time (when the storage tank is filled)

Open Well

1.      Note the level of water in the well (using a tape or a rope)
2.      Pump at least 2000 litres of water from the open well using a portable pump
3.      Note Initial time (at start of pumping)
4.      Note Final time (when the storage tank is filled)
5.      Note the final level of the water level in the well using the tape or the rope after the pumping period

Sample Table:

Name of Source
Pump Capacity
Storage Tank Capacity
Initial Time
Final Time

Calculation (Indicative):

Rate of Flow (litres / hour) = [(Volume of water stored x time taken in minutes) / 24]
